Flow. A Socially Responsible 3D Printed One-Handed Recorder

The recorder is one of the most common instruments used during primary school in the formal education system in the EU. However, there are a percentage of students with only one functional hand. The existing one-handed recorders available for them to be able to play and perform in the same way as their peers are expensive and difficult to use. This study’s purpose is to document the development of Flow—a low cost one-handed recorder as well as the user’s assessment of the psychosocial benefits of the recorder. The methods used for fabrication were 3D modelling and additive manufacturing (AM) technology or 3D printing using the technique of stereolithography, and for the assessment of the product, the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS) questionnaire was distributed to 20 primary school users. The results show that the use of resins and Stereolithography is appropriate for wind instruments providing quality and strength at a fair price. Flow also proved to have a positive impact on the users and their inclusion in school. The main conclusions of this study underscore the adequacy of using AM for adaptations required for people with disabilities and the positive psychosocial benefits generated by the use of Flow in children. This research was partially funded by University of Alicante, Artefactos (non-profit organization) and LaCaixa Foundation

Intention-Aware Risk Estimation for General Traffic Situations, and Application to Intersection Safety

    Get PDF
This work tackles the risk estimation problem from a new perspective: a framework is proposed for reasoning about traffic situations and collision risk at a semantic level, while classic approaches typically reason at a trajectory level. Risk is assessed by estimating the intentions of drivers and detecting conflicts between them, rather than by predicting the future trajectories of the vehicles and detecting collisions between them. More specifically, dangerous situations are identified by comparing what drivers intend to do with what they are expected to do according to the traffic rules. The reasoning about intentions and expectations is performed in a probabilistic manner, in order to take into account sensor uncertainties and interpretation ambiguities. This framework can in theory be applied to any type of traffic situation; here we present its application to the specific case of road intersections. The proposed motion model takes into account the mutual influences between the maneuvers performed by vehicles at an intersection. It also incorporates information about the influence of the geometry and topology of the intersection on the behavior of a vehicle, and therefore can be applied to arbitrary intersection layouts. The approach was validated with field trials using passenger vehicles equipped with Vehicle-to-Vehicle wireless communication modems, and in simulation. The results demonstrate that the algorithm is able to detect dangerous situations early and complies with real-time constraints

Optimización de una cimentación pilotada y de la superestructura de un centro comercial mediante simulación de la interacción terreno-estructura en suelos licuefactables con un caso de sismo dimensionante : análisis comparativo de los resultados con y sin interacción terreno estructura

Congreso celebrado en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Sevilla desde el 24 hasta el 26 de junio de 2015.Soil-structure interaction techniques have been widely written about and largely used in the Energy domain, even if they are still not commonly used among Civil Engineers. Nevertheless, these techniques have been introduced in the latest versions of earthquake codes and their use can lead to large optimizations. The aim of this article is to show a practical methodology to take into account soil-structure interaction in seismic design applied to buildings through a real case where structural optimizations lead to savings valued in 17.5 M€. The structural study is done using a classical modal - spectral seismic analysis completed with the addition of dynamic impedances that reproduce soil structure interaction. This approach accurately incorporates the effects of the soil deformation by shifting the natural frequency of the structure and increasing the global damping of the system. The amount of energy dissipated in the soil is demonstrated in the analysis of the modal damping

Energy space entanglement spectrum of pairing models with s -wave and p -wave symmetry

We study the entanglement between blocks of energy levels in 1D models for s-wave and p-wave superconductivity. The ground state entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum (ES) of a block of levels around the Fermi point is obtained and related to its physical properties. In the superconducting phase at large coupling, the maximal entropy grows with the number of levels L as 12ln(L). The number of levels presenting maximal entanglement is shown to estimate the number of Cooper pairs involved in pairing correlations. Moreover, the properties of the ES signal the presence of the Read-Green quantum phase transition in the p+ip model, and of the Moore-Read line, which is difficult to characterize. This work establishes a link between physical properties of superconducting phases and quantum entanglement. © 2014 American Physical Society. We thank J. Dukelsky, O. Castro-Alvaredo, and B. Double responsibility of foreign language teachers: Primary student-teachers’ perceptions of linguistic and cultural content

    Get PDF
Scholars all over the world have been arguing for foreign language instruction which combines linguistic and cultural content. Eliminating the cultural side results in a deficient process. This study explored prospective teachers’ perceptions of both constituents, since they will ultimately be responsible for their implementation in the foreign language classroom. To this end, 137 students from three European universities were chosen and asked to fill out an online questionnaire with Likert scale items. Data was collected and interpreted using the free statistics software package R (R Core Team, 2019). The findings confirmed that the relevance of linguistic / cultural issues was unanimously acknowledged (98,5%), speaking was appointed as the most desired target skill (97,1%), interpersonal relations (88,3%) as the most important aspect of socio-cultural knowledge, and lessons with native speakers (94,2%) as the most relevant classroom resourc

TEMPORAL LINKS BETVVEEN PRICE INDICES OF STOCK MARKETS WITH OVERLAPPING BUSINESS HOURS

This article analyzes the way in which intemational stock markets transmit information around the world. We are able to decompose the influenced of one market on another one in two elements: the capability of one market to exercise influence on any other market and the sensitivity of every market to information coming from other stock markets. We extend previous work including markets with overlapping operating schedules. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is favourably compared with altemative models.Transmission of stock market information, intemational linkages.
